The only issue is that it looks like they need initislizing after fitting. I've got no idea on the consequences of not doing it.

Honestly I'd look for codes on the car first. It should help pointing you in the right direction, those struts are really expensive.

Does the soft close still work when closing (does the tailgate get pulled into the lock slowly)?
Yes! It functions perfectly when it closes. I push the button on the back or on the remote and it lowers and goes slowly into the latch.
