On my old Cooper S the ride was definitely firmer on 17" than others I tried with 16" wheels, albeit a bit grippier. These days I would say go with the 17s for look and grip but ditch the runflats for some Michelin Pilot Super Sports and the ride should actually be better than on the 16s.
