I don't look at my tail lights when driving, so what they look like means nothing to me. How they work does, and if the lens is made darker they don't work as well. I switched to LED to make them brighter, and if I could make them even more bright I would. Google the number of accidents the result of being rear ended while waiting to make a left turn. That figure could only be made worse with brake and turn signals that are more difficult to see.
