The length is primarily just wasted space on the Mazda. There's actually more leg room in the VW. There's a little less trunk length, but more height and more overall volume in the "still in the box" VW.

Styling wise, the Mazda kills the VW. But '18s motor is exactly the same as the '16. The only difference is head and tail light changes, the logic in the DSC and a few interior pieces are a little nicer and the HUD is now color instead of green. But both motors are still exactly the same.

The Focus is about to be replaced and the interior is naff, but the ST has good power and is fun to drive. The Civic Si drives great, but is F30 sized and so blindingly ugly I couldn't really consider it. Worth pointing out that BMW is offering huge incentives on Minis right now, but the motors are tricky. I really prefer the 3, but it's not going to be fast. The 4 feels a lot like the Mazda engine, lots of low end torque, but power drops off fast and it revs about as fast as Mitch McConnell speaks.
