I lived in China for 10 years and had a 320i for 8 years. Let me tell ya, customizing ANYTHING on your car is illegal in China. From wheels to body kits to suspension to engine mods.

If you go in for an inspection (almost equivalent of a SMOG check but much stricter, and it’s done yearly for older cars), and they don’t pass you for whatever, you can’t go to another inspection center. You’re stuck at that one until you put it back to factory specs. On the 3rd attempt, they’ll charge you for labor as well!

Granted, I think there’s a new rule that new cars are exempt from inspection for 6 years though.. but there are many dips and steep driveways in China. Even stock, my car was scraping. And yes, I know how attack the driveway at an angle but sometimes it’s just not possible with the narrow streets and many obstacles (other cars, bikes, people, etc.).

Very unfeasible to have a modified car in China. They just don’t like you having any fun or personality.
