Yes, it's impossible to upgrade these units to later Android versions.

It might as well have it. It would've been called Speedplay or something like that. On newer units it's called Zlink. But all of these apps would require activation from Chinese so if the unit was factory wiped, chances are the activation is gone as well. In that case Carlinkit is your best bet.
