I had a Mazda 3 hatch with a manual and that 2.5L is the worst engine I've ever had in a car. If you've driven the F56 Cooper S, it's very similar and wildly disappointing since the Mazda is N/A. Tons of torque at partial throttle, but seemingly no more at WOT, tons of throttle lag and it absolutely hates to rev. Anything over 4,500 rpm is a waste.
My GTI is such a better car in nearly every way, but you're four inches taller than me so the back seat of either will be non adult inhabitable.
