If you do decide to simply unplug the valve make sure you make the connector absolutely water tight. I've seen lots of corrosion problems in the harness after this has been done.
CG Precision sells basically a piggy back wireless controller for the valve and it works great, also the remote can be programmed to the home link buttons to open and close the valve
