A junk yard or scrap yard will not take a car without a title.
For her to do the transfer of title to her name in CA, she will have to pay all the fees and sales tax. That might be close to $1000.

As she is not a 'dealer' you can not just put your name on the title as being sold to you without her having it in her name first.
I can't imagine a dealer selling a car and not doing the title and transfer right then and there. Until the title is transferred, the dealer still owns the car and is liable.

It might seem like a 'free' car to you but it will be a huge headache and risk for you.

Walk away from the free car that was not titled into her name and in California's eyes is not the owner to be able to give it away.

Be smart, be safe and do the right thing and stay out of jail and drop the car off at her family's house, give them the keys and tell them she said that she will come to pick it up next week and turn around and walk away.

Or go park it on the street with the keys in it and let someone steal it and rob a bank or kill someone in an accident with it and get caught on video and she gets arrested as owner of the car. Bummer.
