You may be surprised. Look at how many Lamborghini's have been towed in London due to no insurance.

I think you are doing the right thing in not informing your insurance company. I informed mine after someone hit the rear of my wife's car. It's a long story, but we didn't bother to claim in the end, however as it was logged and changed to "information only" it was still classed as a claim! So now I have to remember to list it every time I renew. I wish I just continued with claim now.

I think the Police suggestion is the best route, if they are interested of course.

At least you received no damage to your car.
