What is your budget? I have a 9 year old Cannondale Trail, the model today runs around $1,000. My wife and I ride approx 20 miles per week on paved rural roads in Indiana, it's a great bike. It also handles trails just fine. The tires are a bit wide for road use, but are nice on trails and gravel. I don't consider it a hardcore mountain bike. The hydraulic disk brake system is one of my favorite features.
