I've always found insuring cars with modifications to be a PITA. There's quite a few companies that won't touch modifications at all (usually the cheapest ones) and that really limits choice.
Even those that do deal with modifications can be a bit sketchy. I certainly wouldn't take confirmation over the phone that a modification is ok - if in doubt everything should be in writing as insurance companies can quickly change their opinion if there's a claim at stake. When I did own modified cars I usually found specialist brokers like Adrian Flux to be best and they would properly document anything that was different to the usual spec.
