One more point - there was a plane crash in Colorado Springs in the early 1990's, IIRC. The plane did a nose-dive almost straight into the ground, but at a much lower altitude and speed that the jet on 9/11.

"Firefighters and volunteers surveyed the eerie, incongruous site. The wreckage, like so many shreds of blackened paper, was strewn about singed grass near bare oak and elm trees, in the jagged shadow of the snow-topped Rocky Mountains. Purses and suitcases that looked as if they had hardly been touched mingled with airplane parts burned almost beyond recognition.

"We can't even find a chair," said El Paso County Sheriff Bernie Barry. "There's not a great deal of that airplane left."
