Is your X1 a 35i... if so, it is the same N55 powerplant. The transmission is the ZF 8-speed, pretty reliable and responsive. Just make sure the car has some history of maintenance and may be do a "pre purchase inspection/ PPI".
If you can find/ afford a 340i GT... that has the new B58 motor with somewhat better performance & potential.
