I used a ws2812 led strip, like
this, specifically this version(60 leds/meter, non-waterproof), except mine is white and labeled ip65 waterproof..which by the looks of it I'm pretty sure means non-waterproof.
For each led module I used a piece of strip containing only one led, stuck that to a small piece of circuit board(it's self adhesive) basically creating similar modules to the original ones. Unfortunately I didn't think of taking a picture with the finished module side by side with the original, but here is how a piece of strip looks like next to a dash led module(left).
