I did something similar recently with very fine wet & dry (wheel and tyre still on) to remove a small nick but I haven't polished it or lacquered it which has left a flat spot. It looks much better than before but dosen't look as good as your repair.
I think I'll have another go when the weather gets a little better.

Winter wheels are on at the moment so did this in my garage with no rush to get it finished, just masked the tyre.
