When mine did this, I replaced JUST the bulb holder and it burned out again within two months.
My diagnosis:
"Burnt pin in connector from wiring harness to rear lamp assembly bulb holder.
Replaced connector and rear left bulb holder."
Warranty paid $334.64 for this repair at the BMW dealership.
