I think you're dead-on about the view of German vehicles to a non-car person.
For US options, you're looking at a Jeep SRT or Ford Explorer Sport. I prefer the former, but understand the cost difference is significant.
What about your Japanese options?
My vote also goes with the Volvo XC-90. Looks great, is pretty quick, and doesn't raise eyebrows (like you are referring to the German vehicles).
