On your first statement, I think Lexus are perceived as upmarket Toyotas by many including me, even though I owned one for years. This doesn't bother me however.
On your 2nd statement, totally agree. I persuaded a friend to buy a base Jetta (previous model not the current one) for about $15,000 and it was a great car, exceptionally well built.
