Okay so I also live in a cold weather state. Before I got my garage, on really cold mornings where I haven't started my car for a long time, it would do a normal cold start. On EXTREMELY cold mornings, it wouldn't even do a non-cold start. Literally only goes to 600rpm and stays there until it can safely bring up the rpm.
All of this was with BM3. I think there's another mechanism in place that overrides depending on extreme temperatures. Now that I'm garaged, it does a normal, non-cold start everytime. This is for sure 100% temp related.
