Yes, this. If you plan on keeping the car for a long period of time, I recommend any paint protection. I don't know how recent BMW paint is, but from my knowledge, experience, and searching through craigslist, BMW paint quality on cars like the e46, e39, and e38 is complete shit. I've got friends who've had BMWs with constant clear coat peeling all over areas like the hoods, roofs, and fenders, and others with dry paints and fades all over their car just from living without a garage. My e46 which I still own today is lucky to only have a "dry" paint surface on the roof. Again, maybe they've up'ed their quality, but BMW paint from the 90's and 00's truly sucks.
