itunes library content on the phone plays just fine, but if I use an app like youtube or amazon music or spotify, the screen on the dash seems to indicate it's playing (shows app and track name) but there is no sound.

So here's the deal with this, I've found. Switch the car to another audio source like radio, switch your iphone to spotify or whatever, and switch back to bluetooth and it should play.
I listen to podcasts and I have to do this every time. Or just have spotify already playing when you connect. Basically it just doesn't like switching apps. This is on a '15 M3 but I'm pretty sure our iDrives would be the same.
