I don't know--I've used HomeLink on openers that were that old, and it worked fine. In fact, it was easier because there were no rolling codes.

One thing that I found on one of my cars was that if the batteries are not strong in the opener remote, it can be difficult to initially program. Try it again with fresh batteries.
