I've been driving in Iowa and Wisconsin winters for nearly 40 years...only getting 3 years out of a battery sounds terrible. Our '06 minivan, for example, has the original battery and is being parked outside this year. I've never put a charger on it.
Incidentally, I've not gotten the "low charge" warning again since Monday and temps here have not gotten above 10F.
