Hi everyone, i own a 420i f36 with a b48 as engine, is it possible to tune it up to 300+hp without shortening the lifespan of my engine/damaging it in general? thanks in advance

Hi,

You’ll need a tune and aluminum charge pipe. I recommend these:

Charge Pipe

JB+ Tune

With these you’ll safely be around 300 at the crank, provided the rest of the engine is up to date as far as maintenance. I would recommend going through the cooling and ignition system first (all coolant hoses, reservoirs, spark plugs, ignition coils.

I don't think so, I've seen alot of threads about b48b20a engines having weak pistons. The issue seems to be the high compression rate of 11:1 that doesn't alow for safe tuning in general. Even going for 20% more power could be risky.

My suggestion would be to proceed with extreme caution and consider the consequences if the engine decides to retire early.

B48a20a engine is used in many Mini models and 320i and does have a higher compression ratio. It _could_ be tuned to 260 hp and even that would be a stretch.

b48b20b is the engine you want to tune. It's used in 330i and Mini JCW/GP. It has lower compression ratio and stronger pistons.
