bad steering rack?
i have a 2015 428xi. ever since i’ve bought the car i’ve had very loose steering and a lot of play in the steering wheel. i used to have the notorious steering rack knock that everyone talks about with these steering racks and i had the thrust bushing replaced which got rid of the noise but the loose steering continued. i know it’s not my tires i’ve had all 4 replaced and had the issue before and after. does this sound like i need a whole new steering rack? maybe new tie rods or control arms? i just don’t want to have to spend 1,500$ on a remanufactured steering rack that will give me the same problem later down the line. is there anyone who has found a solution for this?

FCP Euro has a number of good youtube diy's and informative stuff for BMW F series. Of course they are selling but this may help:

keithyo88 i appreciate it. i just watched the video but it doesn’t really help me with my problem. he didn’t mention the steering rack, or the problems with the f30s steering racks

Depends on the rack; if it's a ZF rack, you can undo the cap and try and tighten it down that way
If it's the Thyssenkrupp rack; you need the rack repair kit. BMW PN: 32106891974 https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1908892

What's it doing now? I know it does get to a point unfortunately where a replacement is the only fix But don't discount the arms, I had a knocking and turned out to the one of the ball joints on the main thrust arm / tension strut was failing & I'd get knocking that I couldn't suss out But I was also doing a complete suspension overhaul. That was done in Jan and now zero issues. Everything is tight as a drum
