"Steer-by-wire" cars
Found this today:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-19979380 Is this the equivalent of the BMW system present in the F30? They seem to imply that it's a first in the car industry so I was wondering if this is really the same as BMW? |

No it's different. In steer by wire there's no physical linkage at all between the steering wheel/column and the wheels. A computer recieves input from some input device (can even be a joystick) and then the computer makes the wheels turn. So the steering wheels doesn't even need to be located where it is right now or be in its current form.
F30 steering still has a physical mechanical linkage from steering wheel/column to the wheels. It's just electronically powered/assisted. |

Has anybody addressed what exactly happens when the electrical system fails? That's a real concern. When navigating a sharp corner, does the car drive straight into a brick wall? That sounds like fun, huh?
UPDATE: I just read it. I guess there's back-up mechanicals which kinda make things complicated. Two solutions (and extra weight) for one problem. Ahhh. I'm still a skeptic. Last edited by JoeyO; 10-18-2012 at 09:41 AM.. |

OK I get it now, I have to admin I didn't know for sure if the new BMW still retained a link to the wheels. But thinking about it, it makes sense. That would be too bold a change and yes quite dangerous. Yes you will drive straight into a brick wall or something else if the system fails for whatever reason.

However, the clutch's engagement is obviously controlled by the computer, although it is a fail safe.
