Salvage value of a totaled F30

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Well, my 2012 328i was totaled. Appraisal was OK and they put the salvage value at about $5,700 in case I want to keep it.

I'm wondering if it makes better sense to pay for the salvage to the insurance and try to sell it myself. A quick estimate at junkmycar.com is about $4,200 for an instant pick up but I can easily tell they are low-balling me. What could be a good price if I chose to list it at their site?

The car still starts and I don't think there is a fluid leak. Airbags didn't go off and the interior and electronics are pretty much in tact. It's the front right wheel, windshield, and front left window and its side mirror that's shot as well as the usual -- hood, front bumper, etc.

If you could share a similar experience, that'll be wonderful.

Are you sure you can't just fix that with some touch up paint and a buffer?

The true salvage value is probably closer to $10k at retail. A yard that buys it for $4200 would expect to make at least that much selling off the parts, because they do have to make a profit, and it may take years before they sell off enough of the parts to get that profit. You could probably get $6k for just the engine and transmission if you had someone who wanted it. But a yard has a place to put it while waiting for customers who want the various parts. I wouldn't buy it from the insurance company unless I already had a firm buyer lined up who wanted to pay me more than what it cost me.
