Opinions Please!!!

I am interested in a 2016 340i RWD
It is red with 22,000 miles. Has Msport and Track Package, 19" staggered wheels, auto, etc... currently it is in very good condition, HOWEVER...

It does have a salvage title. The car has been repaired with BMW parts.

The seller wants 21K for the car. What are your thoughts?

Thanks

Not sure how I feel about this if I was looking at this car. Did you test drive? Any salvage title backstory?

Run....take it from a bodyshop manager for 25 yrs now. You have NO clue what they did or how bad the damage was. It was a salvage for a reason and you're not getting a bargain at $21k

Also, not sure in MN but many states you can not reinsure a vehicle that has a salvage title.
If you still are considering it, THAT would be my first call. Check with your carrier if they will insure it. Then or first google the VIN number. Many times you can find pictures of it online from an auction sale page.

If the damage was so bad on a 22k mile car to salvage it, it's definitely will not be worth it. Money talks But I wouldn't pay more than 15k.

+1

Just to add... insurance will insure the car as Liability only. No full coverage.

This question for you TommyG

What's the difference between a salvage title vs rebuilt title. I came across this while barn diving for cars.

Here are some pics of the car... I did drive it and it drove perfectly. I was very aggressive with it and it did not have any issues.

Look like there was a M3 style bumper and fender conversion. I will assume it will be a front end damage.

You have to check with your insurance what coverage you can get on this car.

To me the seller price way to much for salvage.

How much do you think a fair price would be?

Here are the before photos... Looks like the front bumper, fenders, hood, lights, and cooling system were damaged. The seller said the airbags did not deploy.

I don't have much experience with salvage title car but since you test drove it aggressively and could not find anything wrong with it, next step is to get PPI if you can.

After that you can work on pricing. I'd offer the seller 15k If I were you. To see what he say. Good luck OP.

Nobody can tell you because we can't see the frame rails, the fender apron, if anything got buckled or swayed in one direction...

Generally a frontal crash is easier to fix than the rear/ rear quarter areas.

PPI?
After the drive he said the lowest he could go was 21K. This is after I stated I was looking at another 340 with 38K for 26,000 dollars. I didnt offer anything yet.

I told him I wanted to talk to the gentleman that traded the car in and have an independent mechanic look at it. He agreed to both if I wanted to purchase the vehicle.

I dont know either... all I know is the car tracked straight down the road, shifted fine, went into every driving mode. I worked it over pretty good on the road and in a parking lot... it performed very well as far as I could tell.

That's good to hear. To be honest I'd take it to a body shop for inspection if you could. Or even a well trained mechanic can see how well it was repaired if they are familiar with collisions.

I know it was crashed at 16,000 miles.... purchased by a second person and driven for 6,000 miles.... that guy traded it in because he was having twins and his wife said the car was not practical.

I didnt know to believe the story or not so I asked to speak the previous owner. He said he would call and ask if it was ok that I do so.

Almost everyone here has said to walk away, yet you keep asking for more opinions. To me this says you’re just looking for someone to tell you ‘yes, it’s fine, buy it’
I am very particular with such things when buying a car, there are other cars out there

I hear ya... I guess I have been sucked in by the test drive. I have to try and let emotions go and think logically. I thought I could get a nice car at a decent price. There would be no financing involved... I would be paying cash thus, the reason for the inquiry. I do not want to waste my money.

The gap between the hood and front bumper is quite big though.

I wouldn't spend $21k for a salvage car, especially a BMW. I am fairly certain you can find a clean 340i for a few grands more, maybe a bit higher mileage. But given today's used car market... their loss is your gain!
