With today's digital music recordings, the quality of the music can vary greatly. What sounds good with one recording, can sound very poor on another. The different bit rates used in creating say MP3 files can vary greatly, resulting in mixed quality from song to song. Also, different genres of music can be recorded differently, resulting in the need to adjust the bass/treble settings. So, how do you set up the base system? To whatever sounds good to you overall or for that particular set of songs. Even with the hk system, different recordings can sound fantastic, while others at the same setting, sound awful. First try to obtain the best possible quality & clarity of music to listen to. There isn't a one setting to fit all formula.

LOL, sure, there's LOTS I don't know. Seriously. Growing up as a teenager in the '70s, my hobby was hi-fi and I became an electronics technician in the late 70s. Although I don't practice being an electronics technician any longer, my business (video productions) includes a great deal of audio, so I am very aware of the technicalities surrounding this field. Even back in the tape days, there were great differences between tape formulation, (tape) bias eq, tape speed and recorders, which resulted in varying quality as well. Not much has changed from that respect. Yes, my car has the hk and with such an elaborate system, different recording qualities REALLY stand out. Cheers

Ya you tend to get very good quality recordings and very bad ones.. even when i try to stick to 320bit rate mp3.. some of it sounds pretty bad.
P/S- if you're using an ipod or iphone make sure u turn off the equalizer when u plug it in else it will just stack the settings.. it will be hard for u to benchmark your settings in the car. By all means leave the equalizer on when you use your headphones but turn em off when u plug it into ur machine |

I will be changing my front 2 speakers out to aftermarket... its a relatively easy task given i've had some experience in the past. anyone thinking of the same??
U just need decent after market speakers flat enough, dont necessarily need Harmon ones. For under AUD100 u'll be surprise at the results |

I'm going base system and then spending 1.5k on a much better aftermarket system. LOC, amp, speakers.
I have the Dynaudio system in my golf and it's great value for money. I don't see the HK as being the same. |

I know for the E92, the max dept was 28mm... no more than that. and i was pushing it...i can hear the window scrapping it, but lucky no scratches. This time around I will def choose 25mm or less.
Go with an American brands, they tend to have better response for bass, the base in the BMWs really dont cut it. The bass subs are way too shallow and lightweight to dump out decent sound...so we need the front speakers thats all purpose with built in tweeters to cover as much of the frequency range as you desire. |

I used to run an sq setup in my old e36. Nakamichi head unit, 2 ch amp powering some morel speakers in the front and a mono for a single 10 sub in the boot in a custom box.
The difference between running good speakers off the head and from an amp is night and day. Not just volume but crispness and clarity. I just finished a similar setup in a golf gti. A small amp to power the fronts really makes a huge difference. The rears are fine to run off the head. |
