i hate having a new car
I miss having the luxury of a older car, dont worry about where i park it, stick it though any car wash etc.
My car is now 4 months old with 5k on the clock and i have thus far; kerbed one alloy, even though the marks only about an inch it was two days after i got her got a few stone chips on the front bumper but about a 2 months ago got my first big stone chip on the hood\bonnet, have since filled and wet sanding this so now hardly noticable And today i have noticed two small dents on my door from some kind person that opened there door onto mine in a car park i guess. Got a guy coming satuday to hopefully push these out. Is it time to let my car get "old" and give up trying to keep it mint, think im too ocd to own new cars it drives me nuts....! |

Wouldn't want to own an expensive car and live in the city. Or even a car at all. Never know what might happen to it.
Which is why I love the suburbs |

I am sure many people on this forum feel exactly the same. I promised my daughter my old 1997 Ford Taurus and she wants it. So once it is gone, my new ride will have to do all the chores. That means picking quiet times at shopping malls - parking on the outskirts of the malls and hiking in and constant worry. I parked my car about fifty empty spaces away from everyone else. I come out from having lunch and someone parks right next to me just to piss me off. Didn't ding me though so there is that. And kerbing wheels - major worry!

Keeping your car in good condition is one thing, obsessiveness is another. Frankly its just a car. A very nice car, and for some, quite an expensive car (> $100K). But its still just a car. Life's too short to obsess over it.

every little stone might sting... but in the end it's a part of aging i guess...
At least that's what i tell myself every year, during and just after winter.... my car (and mainly the windscreen) get's pounded!!! I'll soon have to replace my windscreen again, averaging about 1 year per windscreen |

I always try to find an end spot to park and when I can't, at least park next to another BMW (in good shape), or something more expensive than mine. If the lot only has compact spots left, I'll just go somewhere else.
Obsessed? Guilty as charged. It just frosts my balls when inconsiderate people bang their doors into other cars in parking lots! Now I have to go chill out... |

The fact is that the same things happen in the 'burbs that happen in the city. It's really about how you deal with it when it happens.

BTW, who had the gun to your head forcing you to buy a new -- rather than used/old -- car? You should report them to the police.

im pretty good about not curbing my rims.
but i've about given up on front bumper damage. i still hate getting that new car and the eventual rock chips and bumper scrapes from pot holes and parking blocks and ramps. good thing resprays arent so much. you can fix the rim pretty cheap though if its not horribly bad. |

I feel the same way. With an old car, if I can get out of the car I park in any tight spot, don`t care about speed bumps, steep ramps, in parking lots I go forward without thinking the wall or bars on the ground, drive into $2 car washes.
With the new one, I only hand wash it myself, feel really bad while parking in supermarkets, go as far as possible from the carts, don`t drive too much forward in parking spots. Owning an ol car is less stressful than a new one for sure.

at least you got the first dings out of the way
2 days into my new car and the wife curbs the rim, not just a little but the whole wheel, I cried.

My E46 and E53 are 10 and 12 years old and I'm still OCD about where I park. One small door ding that was taken care of by Paintless Dent Removal. Couple of small stone chips that I took care of with Langka touch-up kit. Try really hard not to follow behind the semi's and full-sized pickup trucks with those large moded tires. My wife still gives me a rough time about parking away from the other cars but I tell her it's good exercise to walk!

this is the first car I haven't obsessed with, and I've noticed that...it actually works. I park near a$$holes, I tail truckers, and really nothing happens...it's odd. But I live in the suburbs, if I was in NYC...

yeah this is kind of my philosophy. i mean a bumper respray is only $500-600 and even a rim that is rashed if its a painted alloy like our rims, rim shops can repair them for $100-150 and you can't tell the difference. sometimes they can even do it in your parking lot / garage. |

After my wife dented my old car's rear fender 5 years ago so badly it would rub the tire if we put four people in the car (a major crater), and wouldn't fix it, a few dings in the new car will not degrade my mood.
But she can't leave 4 pairs of shoes in the backseat, "just in case", nor stuff the glove compartment and bins on the doors with vacation flyers, coupons, and menus in the new car. |
