Heated Steering Wheel Stuck Always On

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi all, posting here as I may get more help than in the 2er forums.

I just retrofitted a new steering wheel with perforated leather and the m colour stitching on the inside to my F22. The steering wheel is custom from eBay so definitely not original from BMW. The quality and finish is really good and everything feels solid. I deliberately got this one because it retained the OEM heating function without having to “delete” it.

I installed everything and went to check the heating function afterwards. Turns out the heating already starts as soon as the ignition is on. The wheel also gets quite hot to the touch, much more than with the OEM steering wheel. It seems like the button on the side of the column doesn’t do anything. I can click it indefinitely, the deactivation does nothing.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far and would appreciate any further input:

• Checked with ISTA and getting around 20amps to the heated steering wheel
• The steering column button is registered when clicked in ISTA
• All other buttons/functions on the wheel work just fine
• Coded the saved heated memory time for the function to 0 mins from 15 mins
• Coded out the SA248A from the VO/FA (factory heated steering option)

This never happened on the original m sport steering wheel so it’s obvious I’ve either damaged something during the install or the new steering wheel is somewhat broken.

No matter what, the heating function remains always on.

When the car is switched off, it cools down so there is no drain from the battery. It only turns on when the ignition or engine is on.

The obvious workaround would be to disconnect the heated steering function cable but it kind of defeats the point of having the button now (and getting the specific steering wheel).

I would appreciate any suggestions/help

Is the button lit up? Do you get a notice acticated / deactivated in the cluster?

You mean is the button automatically by default lit up and the notice comes on without pressing? Then no, it doesn’t.

Then I think something within the steering wheel is shorted. Steering wheel heating is on a relay (Terminal 15N - Ignition) from the fusebox (F48) so that describes the behaviour you have that it shuts down when you shut down the car.

I guess your steering wheel electronics are at fault here

Dis you reuse the steering wheel electronics from your old steering wheel or did the new one come with a new nodule?

Came with the new electronics so those are probably at fault
