Harmon Kardon Audio

I have the HK set up in my F31. I'm actually really happy with it overall. However, I do feel like something is "missing", but can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe I need to play around with the settings more. Back in the day, I always used to modify the ICE in every car I had, god knows how much I've spent, but was always premium brands (i.e. Focal & Rainbow).

Has anyone had the HK set up and then "upgraded" to improve the sound even further? If so, what did you upgrade to?

Ive not done it myself but from what ive read in previous threads is most people who are unhappy with the HK audio go for an amp upgrade and change the subs to focal

Is this the focal sub most people go for and is it much better than the HK sub?

I've done a sub upgrade with additional amp (HK from factory).
Done a couple of write ups. I'll dig them out & post the links...

I think there is a thread on here where a sound engineer posted his EQ settings. Make a massive difference IMO.

Hi there
This thread has a lot of info and suggestions to settings for the EQ in the HK system.
I've used it as a base and adjusted it to my liking.
Default settings does not sound very good, but play around with the EQ and maybe code to B&O settings. Makes quite a difference....

I'm pretty happy with the sound, but stepping outside the vehicle is embarrassing. Sounds like it's rattling apart. I like to listen to music when I wash and tinker with the car, but had to buy a bluetooth speaker for that purpose.
Has anyone successfully removed all rattles and vibrations with dynamat or similar?

I had the focal BMW coaxial speaker/subs all powered by an audison amp with a bit one DSP all fitted into a X3 and a 325. Amazing setup (kudo to Dave @ Safe n Sound) however the last 2 cars have had the HK setup and I’ve been really happy, I’ve played around with the frequencies, I know that I’m not going to get bone shaking bass but it’s a nice setup.

Most, if not all the outside noise/rattle will be from the sills. The underseat woofers are vented into the sill void.

Yes, seems that's where its coming from. Do you know how to fix it?

How do you code to B&O settings? Bimmercode?

So based on that thread, the popular spec to try is this:

Bass & Treble = Flat
Balance & Fader = Centered
L7 active
(Speed Volume = Center)

100Hz +4 (sometimes +5)
200Hz -5
500Hz +2
1kHz +1
2kHz Flat
5kHz -1
10kHz Flat

I'll give it a go tomorrow!

I don't tbh. I'd guess, pull the sills off & refit them with foam tape & trim the excess. It's not too bad on mine, so it's not something I've felt the need to address.

Lol. I joined this forum and created a post about the disappointing diesel like noise coming from my 328i. Only thing I truly can criticize really about the car.

As for the OP. I now have the HK upgrade in my new car. Coming up from the basic hifi in my last car I feel like I'm in a live concert. Partly because the basic hifi was so poor in comparison . The HK has so much more quality and clarity in comparison. In my youth I used to upgrade speakers to 6 x 9s and many a friend had subwoofer and amp upgrades - set ups were deffo louder and bassier, but the clarity was abysmal. My crude and basic method of putting bass and treble on max will be overridden by the suggested eq settings tomorrow. Gotta love this forum so helpful

Yes, use BimmerCode to code B&O settings.
There's a thread on that here also

Yes via Bimmercode, as long as you have HK & Logic7 the coding would be....

HU_NBT or HU_NBT2 > HMI 3000 > HIGH_END_AUDIO_MENUE = volle_insz

Default for Logic7 - kein_menue
Bang & Olufsen - volle_insz

So you're disappointed with the sound from outside the vehicle with all doors and windows shut?

That's funny.

When I work on the car I usually keep one of two doors open while listening to music - at least I used to on my 330i. On this one, at moderate volume the panels rattle to the point where I just turn it off.
