UK internal fights info required
OK, forum need some advice.
Looks like work is going to be taking me around the UK for meetings/conferences etc which will involve overnight stays and flights. So questions. What size luggage can I get away with in cabin rather than booking to the hold and recommendations on such luggage. Also what's the latest time I can check in and any other tips on domestic flights. Will be leaving via Birmingham. Thanks in anticipation. |

Depends on the airline. EasyJet are much more straight forward than Ryanair who are a bunch of parasites.
On EasyJet you can use a standard trolly dolly size case no problems. |

Check in can be done online but again it depends on the airline.
Also, consider security gate timings. I was turned around at heathrow terminal 5 because i left it 2mins too late to get through security. Was well over an hour till my internal flight back to newcastle. BA put me on a later flight for 60quid but the delay was longer than it would have took to drive ha ha. You live and learn... i was actually helping a Lithuanian guy with directions to another terminal. I'd been in the airport for ages. |

Depending on where you're going then you may end on FlyBe a fair bit so check them too. Unfortunately the colleaues I have who have to use them a lot tend to call them Fly Maybe due to the amount of cancelled and delayed flights they have.
I'm just glad my nearest airport is Heathrow, so I have a good excuse to stick with BA. Not a brilliant airline, but T5 is a pleasant terminal to use all the time, no worries with copious had luggage, and lounges at all the other airports.

Fly Maybe indeed. I have had the rather dubious pleasure on numerous occasions.
Sadly their timings and fares are pretty good. Flybe often use Dash 8 aircraft and the overhead lockers are minimum size so a normal trolley bag may not fit. Check in on line. Brum security isn't too bad. Manchester security can get congested East Midlands security trained by the SS Either way take care to segregate liquids properly. With electrical kit, if in doubt, take it out of the bag - anything odd on the x ray will mean a separate search, which may mean a delay of 20 minutes or more at peak times. Frustrating. I carried exactly the same stuff in the same bag every trip and I reckoned to get a bag search about 20% of the time. Boots do better and cheaper sarnies than Smiths. If flying late, hit Boots after 6pm for the really cheap sarnies!! Flybe frequent flyer program will get you "free" flights fairly quickly, but with tax it doesn't end up much cheaper. Thankfully I'm out of the commute now! |

And remember sometimes a first class train journey can be more productive as you can work and make calls (sort of..) whilst you travel.
I used to do Derbyshire to Scotland (Livingston, Aberdeen, Perth, Banff), Cornwall, Anglesey, north Yorkshire etc and I tried all alternatives. Train was favourite to Edinburgh, fly to Aberdeen and occasionally to Newquay, but car to Anglesey for obvious reasons, as well as Newquay if Fly Maybe were not going direct.... |

I had a colleague who flew from Brum to Edinburgh, I couldn’t get a flight from Manchester, so I drove. We left our houses (Me North Staffordshire, him 25min from airport) at the same time and I beat him to the meeting by about 15 minutes. I then beat him back home by 5 hours as he had to wait for the flight back. The 330d did the whole trip on one tank.

Unless you live in Cornwall and need to get to Aberdeen or Belfast I can't think why you'd want to fly total pain the arse, train and or car.
I used to fly to Dublin every week got sick of it and used the ferry instead much better. |

Having spent most of last year commuting between London and Aberdeen, flying is a pain!
Things to consider. Carried on luggage cannot have liquids above 100ml containers, and must go in the small clear bag, can be annoying if away for a few nights. I used to leave a toiletries bag at the Aberdeen office to get around this. Internal flights are always the first to be delayed if there are any issues, this can mean significant disruption. Small planes equal poor flights. Having spent the last 10 years doing long haul to SE Asia on 777 and A380, flying in the UK in a small foil tube can make for some pretty turbulent flights - I love flying, but had a couple last year which really turned my stomach. Even if you abide by the cabin luggage size, space is limited. They often put even allowed sized bags in the hold as you board - certainly in the London City to Aberdeen flight operated by Eastern Airways. There are some routes where flying is the only option, but personally given the choice, I'd take the train where you can. |

In relation to the luggage question...
I've had success with this https://www.gate8-luggage.co.uk/whee...uggage-garment. Enough room for a suit, 2 or 3 shirts and all the other usual stuff. Laptop section zips off which is useful if the bags full and locker space is tight. Never had an issue taking it in the cabin, even on Flybe (incidentally it was advertised in their own inflight magazine) |
