JD Power results are in...

And its not so great news for BMW, or Audi for that matter...

Overall results as below:

Peugeot top, followed by Skoda, Hyundai and Nissan. BMW bottom, just below Fiat, Audi, Jag and Land Rover and Mercedes. Volvo highest placed of the prestige brands in 10th. Vauxhall 6th, Mini 8th and Ford 9th. Honda, VW, Dacia and Seat better than average.

Discuss....

Are these the Initial Quality results, or the longer term results (3 years?).
For me, the long term results are more meaningful.

I'm not at all surprised.

My 30d, for the first 2 years that I had it (from 2 years old, so years 3 and 4), has been the most fault-ridden and frustrating car I've ever owned.

If/when I replace it I'll be very tempted to look elsewhere.

Standard comment from all my BMW owning mates are:
"it's been amazing, apart from........"

Mine was awesome, apart from.....
2 massive oil leaks from the turbo.
EGR failed
1-8 selector buttons cracked/split
3 punctures all stranding me in mid Spain each time
Wind noise
road noise

JD Power is about right I reckon

don't forget the steering racks clicking
and the air conditioning condenser corroding
and the front dampers knocking
and the ZF AT jolting
and the window rubbers shrinking
and
and

If I'd wanted a shit car I'd have bought a Dacia, but that may being unkind to Dacia.

My 330d is coming up to 5 years old and up to this moment has been totally gremlin-free.
Maybe I'm one of lucky owners.

The only manufacturers I'd seriously consider to replace my car would be Mercedes, or perhaps Porsche (fun and older 2nd car). And Honda.

I appreciate that personal experience is just that, personal, and so very limited but it means a lot more to me than these reliability/satisfaction reports.
Sure, if I wanted a "more reliable" car id get a Volvo. However, I've had a few Volvo's. One was very unreliable. Endless repairs under warranty, some major incl new steering rack and new tailgate. Customer service was very good but I wouldn't get another one.
I've had six BMWs and never had any major problems. If these surveys are anything to go by, I've obviously been very lucky

I'm not sure the faults have to be serious, just something which needs garage attention in some way.

And whilst I always go with personal experience, and how the dealer have dealt with me and the problem, these things do raise questions about some of the big brands.

I've had a few Volvos and a few Peugeots, not had any real problems with any - although a very early 406 had some turbo issues but it was OK as my brother was service manager and I just swapped cars with him when it needed work....

Wouldn't disagree with your point about the big premium brands.
My wife has had three Fords in a row and has not had one problem with any of them. Others will have had a completely different experience, of course

My F30 has certainly been in for quite a few minor issues over the 5 years / 60k miles of ownership, as have most of my other BMWs over the last 2 decades.

The thing that makes this tolerable for me is the approach of the dealer who will book it in at my convenience, and lend me a decent car, so faults don't really blight the ownership experience. If the dealer was more difficult about issues, or a long way away, I can imagine getting pissed off with this, but I actually quite enjoy driving a wide variety of BMWs. I don't look forward to the car going in, but it really doesn't bother me.

We also had a Shogun for a while and the car had a similar number of issues, but the dealer was utterly crap and would try and fob me off with some heap of junk that had just been part exchanged, making the whole experience unpleasant. Take away the decent dealer and I wouldn't buy BMWs.

I think I suffer from Stockholm syndrome as I quite like getting my car in for updates and little issues, I get to drive another car (they always give me nice loaners) and get to poke around the cars in the showroom.

I was at the dealer today and looked forward to it, checked out the LCI 7 series and new G20 3 series.

I always wonder with these surveys - is there any correlation between the make/type of car someone buys and their likelihood of complaining or finding fault with it?

Yeah I think that's the case, more of a satisfaction survey than an out and out reliability survey.

I've never had a BMW leave me at the side of the road in almost 500,000 miles.
