How expensive are cars in Australia anyway? I always thought they were cheap...(or maybe it's just that, compared with SG, they're cheaper). Would you know how much my car would cost in Aus, J1n?

SGScuba: Based on your description here.. it seems as though the base price is higher but the options seems so much cheaper.
For a 328 base it's ~75k AUD before any options.. each would go for around 1.5k AUD roughly, and this is retail price before any discounts we can negotiate. SO to answer your question how much your car would cost roughly between 80-85k AUD. I believe u all have more vehicle import tax or something. "Quite a lot of options were already selected by the BMW distributor - priced at S$215,000. I added Sport line, Lumbar support, HK system, front PDC & rear camera for another almost S$7,000. Total just a sliver under S$222k (about AUD171k, Euro135k, USD176k)." Back to the topic .. has anyone else experienced order delays? |

indeed but oh well!
I'm gonna be having a stern word either over the phone or in person next week. Tuesday or Wednesday probably. If they offer a decent loaner to tide me over, I won't be AS bothered. I'm not gonna be happy with a 116i though. I'd take the equivilant d but the 16i (and 18i) seriously wound me up. You have to rev the nuts off them to move them anywhere and even then, they still don't move!! Very very uneconomical and an embarrassment to the BMW brand. This was the old 1er though, the F20 may be a different story. Other than that, I'd love a 1er! I'd bite their hand off at a 120d!! Anyway, we'll see how it goes and I'll let you know. As I said earlier, I still need "confirmation" of the delay.

Each market is given an allotment of a months total production of the BMW network. The market then divides that number amongst it's dealer network based on a proprietary formula (each market is different). That dealer then has that many units of that model each with a specific production slot. Smaller markets have less allocations, dealers get leas product.
That is how allocations work. You may walk into a dealer in February and their next available build is not until June- go to a different dealer and they have a build next week. A dealer also wants to capitalize on each slot so could someone outbid for an earlier build- yes it happens. There is no N20 shortage. The OPs dealer doesn't have a build slot and is trying to prevent losing the sale. With South Africa and Regensburg now online the 328i production is at full steam.

glad I snapped up my sons when I saw it!!! I've never waited for a car, if they don't have it I don't buy it. I've never had a car that I've purchased new that wasn't sitting on a dealers lot.

It's probably worth the wait, and you get the car exactly as you want is (exterior, interior and all the options). Or is it just that Americans just doesn't care too much about that? |

It's true, though, for some reason people in the US want to just drive off the lot with a car rather than to wait for it for several months. I'm unsure where the impatience to wait comes from, but it's there.

I'm impulsive. I'm very type-a, I hate when people waste time and I hate when people waste my time. Waiting for a car to be delivered would be the death of me. If it's on the lot, I'll buy it - if not I'll wait for it to be sitting there to buy it. When I'm sitting in the waiting room waiting for my car to be ready is how I make most of my deals, I get bored, walk around, see something I like and jump on it. With my M5 I had no intention of buying one, it was in the showroom and caught my eye. I had it out of the showroom before my other car was even ready..
My ex-wife used to hate it and she would try and control what and when I would do things - I used to have to consult with her and have her give suggestions, opinions and she would usually have the ultimate say, I blame her for the way I am :P

Righty, plan of action! Hopefully... if I have time tomorrow...
Ask for my 328i's VIN No. as E90Fleet suggested. If it is close to production, he will be able to produce it. If he can't, then heads are gonna roll! And what are your thoughts to this idea: It's a bit of a long shot but how about I send a very nice email to Fisker, somehow asking them if they know of an N20 shortage, seeing as they will be using the N20 in its most potent 28i form as a generator to power their new Atlantic. Worth a try or should I not bother? Cheers for the help guys, much appreciated and I'll keep you updated how it all goes. Any more suggestions/knowledge - slam 'em in!

I'm not emotionally attached to things I guess. Sure I like driving nice cars, who doesn't but I've had enough things ripped away from me to know what its like to have nothing. I started with nothing, then I had everything, then I went back to having nothing. I'm back to a comfortable life, my kids school is paid for their cars are paid for and they're taken care of.

I just ordered mine 04/07/12 so we shall see if my dealer is gonna screw me over or not.... I held my ground on my price at $1000 over invoice and eventually they caved and asked me to order. I am planning on trying to get them down another $500 when I pick up and sign papers as I just gave them a deposit for now.

In the UK also and I am having similar issues on delivery of my new 328i in Alpine White, it was ordered at the end of Jan and the lease company gave me an estimated delivery date of the w/c 10th of April (this week). I did think it was funny that I had not heard anything from them last week so I emailed them over the weekend and they got back to me with the bad news. Everything had been going great and then the Dealer got in contact to say that the date had slipped. Apparently the car is built ready to be sprayed but for sone unknown reason it is going to take them another 5 weeks to complete the build and get it shipped (now looking at the w/c 18th May. Sounds like someone is being fed false info along the lines, I have told the lease company that they need to get this resolved, my current (cough cough A4) has now had to be put onto a rolling contract until they can get it sorted. Not very happy either and there excuse sounds a little suspicious to me. |

The body is also only allocated a VIN number when it goes into final assembly, so after painting. ( They can re-allocate a body at any time to any VIN before final assembly starts) The whole process from first weld to the car being driven out the factory takes around 48Hours, which includes built in buffer hold times of up to 12 hours at a time. ( After paint buffer is usually the longest) I know E90 that went into production on a Monday, finished on the Tuesday, sent to the dealer on Wednesday, got Tint , Tracking system install and final dealer Inspection on Thursday and owners picked them up first thing Friday morning

I thought something didn't sound right, so I'll push them for the truth now, I can't tell why they would make something up like that and I can't imagine what the delay is either. Many Thanks |
