New F30 Owners with Manual Transmissions
Does the new F30 equipped with a manual transmission have a notchy 1-2 shift?
I'm wondering if they fixed the problem from the last generation. Thanks. |

Interesting, no wonder the 328i is so quick, it has a 3.91, while the 335i has a 3.23. Of course the E92 335i is listed as a 3.08, so this doesn't explain why the F30 335i is a little slower than the E90. I'm too lazy to look at 1st and 2nd alone, but that could explain it.

Just remember the 328i and 335i manual gearboxes are different with different gear ratio's aswell. So you cant just look at the differential ratios.

See, when I woke up this morning, I just assumed they had the same gear ratios, rear rend and transmission. Now I know differently. Thanks!

Hi folks, it looks like BMW has tuned the new f30, 328i engines with significantly less engine drag during engine braking. I was wondering if the manual transmission continues to be as much fun without the engine drag during engine braking. Thx

One of the reasons for the notchy 1:2 shift is the CDV (Clutch Delay Valve). It makes it easier for 16-year old girls to drive a manual transmission without stalling, but it makes it notchy for everyone else. On the E9X, you can remove this CDV with a part from Bavarian Auto Sport. Does the F30 have the same CDV?

A CDV is a valve in the clutch hydraulic which restricts the flow of hydraulic fluid. In so doing, it limits how fast the clutch allows the driveline to engage.
It can make it easier for the inexperienced manual operator (a CDV helps avoid stalls and abrupt upshifts), but is incredible annoying and frustrating for someone who can properly handle a manual transmission. |

I don't think the engine braking makes much difference for fun. It is just kind of annoying to need to use the brakes when cruising down hill.

As I recall the ex E90 M3 and ex E90 335i, both MT were a tad smoother from 1-2. This morning I did 4 of those sprints and the last one was the smoothest. In normal driving there is nothing notchy about the 1-2 shift though. So how can I get rid of the CDV No F30 yet: http://www.zeckhausen.com/cdv.htm EDIT: If the CDV is removed or modified I 'm sure MY 0-100kmh times can be reduced with at least 0.5 seconds.... Looking at the parts diagram for the clutch I do not see a separate CDV like on past models. It could be that the CDV is inside the clutch slave cylinder. Until somebody goes rooting around all we can do is guess...
On my Evo the CDV was inside where the clutch line attached to the slave cylinder. I needed to remove the line and pull it out using a very thin screwdriver. Taking it out really helped that car and I imagine it will help the 328 also. |

And you will stall all right with or without CDV. It is installed to protect clutch mechanizm. |

Benefits of replacing your CDV with a modified unit After the stock CDV is replaced with one of our modified units, you will be able to shift gears in your BMW like a "normal" car. No more vague, inconsistent clutch engagement. No more jerky 1-2 shifts. You can actually chirp the tires when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear! Parallel parking becomes a breeze and your clutch will love you for it and last much longer. Best of all, your passengers will stop making fun of your driving skills.
