Calling all brake experts! What brakes do I have
Hey guys, which size discs and pads shall I order - can anyone confirm for me please
I have f31 2017 335d Looks like I have blue brembos up front but the normal standard floating calipers at the back - Only had the car a few days but I always thought if you had blue brembos up front you have it at the back too? Not sure if previous owner was messing around with the brakes maybe. Anyway could experts please advise on the right size discs I need to order Also any recommendations for mid range discs and pads would be amazing too Thank you! |

I believe all 335d have Brembo front calipers, but the standards are silver. It might just be the picture but that blue looks different to mine (my blue looks a little “flatter” I think) so I suspect someone may have just painted the standard 340/330 (IIRC) caliper setup on your car?
edit - from when I was looking for what options I wanted to buy standard brakes = 340mm front, silver Brembo 4-pot caliper. 330mm rear, silver single-piston caliper. M-Sport brakes = 340/370mm front, blue Brembo 4-pot caliper (same caliper for both sizes, but different mounting so you can't upgrade from 340 to 370). 345mm rear, blue two-pot Brembo caliper. M-Poerformance brakes = same as sport, but in three different colours (red/orange/something else) The picture of your rear caliper also doesn't look like what I remember the Brembo rear caliper looking like (although I haven't been out to look at the one on my car to compare) which again makes me think you've got a stock 340/330 setup that used to be silver but has been painted blue to look like the M-Sport because the front caliper is the same one so if you got the colour on it, it would look the part. There's also https://www.mdecoder.com/ where you can throw in your VIN and see the spec sheet; if you see "S2NH (M Sport Brake)" then 340/370 front, 345 rear. If not, then 340/330. TRW, Jurid, Textar and ATE are OEM; and then OEM BMW on top If you can/want to - go with OEM BMW brakes all round; after that ATE discs & pads via Autodoc (their ceramic pads are superb FYI and excellent for very little dust) I'd personally avoid anything from ECP or the likes of Mtec/EBC brakes; but that's my preference

That or a clumsy mech that's whacked the caliper with the spanner undoing the bleed nipple to bleed the brakes...
The paint does easily chip on the Brembo calipers unfortunately

The threads on my original nipples fitted to the 370mm setup on mine had paint on them, I don't think that's an indicator, but 335d's with the sliding calipers never came painted so that would definitely scream 'painted' small 340mm calipers to me.

Thanks for all the feedback on this one guys
It got me thinking of upgrading the lot - could I buy something like this and get it fitted by my mechanic without much trouble/hassel? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/156020991...mis&media=COPY https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/386818439...mis&media=COPY My thoughts are, will I need to upgrade with modified adaptors or supporting items I.e. brake servo etc to make it all work properly like the came with them |

You could get that, don't think you need any adaptors, on normal floating calipers you have caliper carrier that bolts to hub. Brembo calipers is all one unit and it should just bolt on.
There is plenty talk about coding that vehicle is fitted S2NHA brakes, search on here, I could be wrong here but is to do with ABS ect. Is it worth it? I would be on side of caution with 2nd hand calipers, brembo are prone to snapping bleed nipples is well so you might fit your new 2nd hand calippers and have world of problems. I personally don't do 2nd hand disks or pads don't matter how they look on pictures. So would prefer to fit new disk and pads all around adding fair bit of cost. |

Calipers; go for it (just get them refurbed / rebuilt before you fit them); peace of mind then... But 2nd hand/used discs & pads; no thanks. I'd want new discs & pads all round to ensure that they wear evenly as they should and don't have any corrosion from the off etc You've no idea how those brakes were used in the past; whether there's bad pad deposits on the discs/pads glazed etc... It's false economy to fit 2nd hand stuff like that I'd also recommend decent braided lines like HEL and a full fluid flush & refill

1st link is from an f3x and the 2nd link is from f8x the calipers are the same but the discs from an f8x are 380mm front/370mm rear as opposed to 370mm front/345mm rear on f3x - you can run the larger discs with an adapter to fit the caliper in the right place, but future brake jobs will be more expensive as brakes for M cars are more expensive in general. Easiest option would be to go for the 1st link/f3x brakes as you won't really require anything extra, just coding |
