Agreed. While I can appreciate the technology in the i8, in the same price range there would a long list of cars I would rather have.

Just realized the guy who ranted about global warming is from Canada. They control the media there so he isn't being allowed to see the full story by his decidedly left government. Sorry I replied so harshly. Now I realize it was a reply of ignorance instead of zeal.

And by the way if you bother to follow the news you'd know we had a "decidedly right" government for over 8 years since Harper came to power. Or maybe you find even Harper too much of a lefty??? No wonder the rest of the world doesn't take americans seriously |

He's lefty too. Car sucks, and yes they block right wing news media from broadcasting in Canada. Can y I u get fox? No. Cnn, msnbc? Yes. It's agenda driven. Good thing rest of the world doesn't know where Canada is. Whole if series sucks. The only other I I've seen is the little one with hemp used as a construction material. Fugliest car since the Nissan cube or Pontiac Aztec. Where the heck is the bmw I design team? Amsterdam? Denver? And the Norwegians invented hockey.

harper is as rightwing as they come. as for TV in fact I have cnn and msnbc on my cable feed right now. i just can't be bothered to get my news from a bunch of ignorant loudmouthed americans as for Faux News, it's also available. It's just that most of us canadians are smart enough not to order it as part of our cable package, except the few of us who like to laugh at that entertainment they call "news" over in the US |

At least the rest of the world knows where that is. Don't mess with the US. Right now I agree we are being taken less seriously. Look at the clown in charge for the last 6 yrs to see why.
Back to the pot cars guys.

It would be nice if someday we could all be on electric cars. Electric cars that are every bit as fast, reliable, and FUN as their carbon driven counterparts are today.
Of course, it would be nice when that day comes that there are actually coal plants around to create the electricity needed to fuel these utopian cars of tomorrow. |

Obviously, it doesn't appeal to you because you are not the target demographic.
Get over it. This classic American "It's pointless because it's not what I want" mindset is probably the reason why BMW often doesn't think it's work bringing certain models or options to the USA. |

Noop. The reason why the US doesn't get some models is because BMW NA(the importer) does NOT think certain models will sell enough units to be profitable. BMW AG has offered BMW NA these special low volume models(F31, F11 (wagons) and CRT M3 come to mind)... its just that NA has declined to see them. Btw... the US does get some models that even Germany does not get. Car models like the e60 535i (N54), X1 xDrive35(N55) and the X3 with the N55 engine. I'm sure there are a few more models which I am forgetting. Dackel

Correct. I wouldn't mind having the high mileage diesels here from many German makers but they don't think Americans will buy them. Also, the station wagons/club versions were pretty much legislated out of existence by carter to save gas. The idea was to get Americans to buy more fuel efficient vehicles. The reverse effect happened. Americans bought vans and the mass market SUV took off as suitable replacements. Now Americans don't buy them for family use anymore which is why those models don't ship here anymore.

I'm not going to get into an argument here (like to keep everything civil), but I'll just state what I have to say:
-Global warming is a fact. "The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it." I have a bachelor's degree from the University of Miami in Geological Sciences, and I'm about to start my master's program in Earth and Environmental Sciences at Vanderbilt, and I can tell you with absolute certainty that global warming is a fact. Now, I will also tell you that it is something that happens naturally. It will happen, regardless of human involvement. However, we are speeding it up exponentially. -I am a die hard lover of petrol motors. I don't see myself ever going to a hybrid or electric motor. I love the smell of high octane fuel and hydrocarbons. I love going fast and hearing the sound of raw power. I am, by no means, a "greenie" or anything close. -The i8 is an amazing piece of technology, for what it is. But you also have to understand that its target audience is still a fairly niche market. And it's nowhere near on the level that Tesla is at. But it's definitely a start. And as for charging, that's still a big thing that companies like Tesla and BMW are working on. But even here in the states, there are quite a few charging stations. Not to mention that if you're driving a Tesla, you can recharge nearly half of your battery while you're simply eating lunch. And travel roughly 300 miles from a single charge. Again, it's a work in progress, which means it will get MUCH more improved over the coming years. It's not something I'll ever find myself associating with on a personal level, and I don't see myself ever owning a Tesla or BMW i8 (or similar), but still. I'm at least realistic about it. |

I have no interest in the i8 either but that's for the same reason I don't have any interest in say, a Ferrari 458 Italia or a private jet. I'll never have the coin for one, so why bother torturing myself by fawning over it?

Saw the i8 at an Ultimate Driving Event. I'm not a big "hotrod" lover anyway, but those doors are going to decapitate someone in a parking lot. At least it doesn't make me feel, as the i3 does, that a goatee and a latte are required every time I take the driver's seat.
I think the politically-driven arguments about the scientifically verified warming trend in the world's climate is embarrassing, BUT hybrid-hater, and other non-petrol technology haters might consider my point of view - If we were less reliant on petroleum, a lot more Americans would be alive today than were alive in September 2001 - and a lot more of those living would have all their limbs...and we could more comfortably ignore a part of the world that IMO well deserves to be ignored, until ti can pull itself together. |

Cannot compare a tesla to the i8. The i8 is leaps and bound ahead IMHO (mpg weight, handling, looks, build quality, collectibility) . Raw power the tesla wins, but its a heavy crappy put together (panel gaps) expensive POS (just seems cheap to us in the states because they cut the dealers out I suppose and have attractive options for small business owners).
The CEOs inability to take criticism from any established automotive media is a minus as well. |

I have huge interest in the technology as the CF technology and the plug-in hybrid power trains that includes a gasser. Love the 918, LaFerrari and P1. It give me hope that great motoring can be had in the future and still fulfill regulations.
However I will not pay more for less and I dislike new technology that solves problems that isn't there and add adds isolation ( EPS, EDC ) to name two. The i8s problem is not the technology or that it's a hybrid IMO. It's that it looks and performance relatively soft and weak in relation to it's price. There's also something non badass about it. Like a Goofy space car or hot rodded Prius. I'm no fan. Now if M can get their hands on it, things would likely change but so will the price... |

I agree with everything said above about the car and totally disagree about the global warming. You go bs 20 years and it was global cooling and the data showed we were heading rapidly into an ice age. Well sorry, but the universities are all left leaning and pushing an agenda. That agenda is redistribution of wealth. Since communism fell, the socialist activists have used this as their new method of pushing a socialist agenda. The problem is that none of their predictions are coming true. Global warming has not happened in 114 yrs and the earth has actually cooled over the past 20. If you want to fight carbon emissions, become a vegetarian because the largest emittor of carbon is cow farts. Less beef ate, less emissions. Emissions are up globally exponentially but Temps are a flat line so now the greenhouse gasers have switched to weather volatility and away from climate change because there isn't any. Each thunderstorm is because you drive a car. Ridiculous. Sorry, but it's patently a lie. And the agenda of the lie is to get more power for the government and redistribute wealth. The reality is it will just destroy wealth.

Scary how many educated people deny science these days.
That being said, I do not care about the i8 because it is so expensive that I will never buy one, new or used. So why should I care then. |

Climate change is, in all likelihood, a reality based on an overwhelming majority of scientific analysis and data. With research looking as far back as 400 years and have found that the last couple decades have been the hottest in that time span. With that said, I like the i8 a lot and the different tech it brings, but for $130k could probably find a multitude of other cars I'd rather actually own. That being said, if you don't like the i8, there's plenty of old fashioned gasoline only performance cars that you can buy. Hell, if you wanted, $60k gets you a supercharged V8 700+ HP Hellcat. So your political undertones aside, there's plenty of options beyond performance hybrid or electric cars and will be for sometime. To deny the promise though that performance hybrids/electric cars can bring though and writing it off as some political play seems kinda juvenile. I don't care if it runs off of water or organic produce from Whole Foods, fast is fast. I don't think people buy it to say "HEY LOOK AT ME I'M SAVING THE WORLD!", most people who buy Prii's (I believe that's the actual plural term for that god awful car) just want to save money on gas. I suspect the people who buy Tesla's and i8's are just people who are drawn to the styling and the tech features of the car as well as the fact that it doesn't have the personality of a fax machine. If I ever bought one of these (or the more expensive alternatives from Porsche and Ferrari), it's not because I think I'm saving the world (batteries, as you said, don't grow on trees), it's because I really do think the tech they offer is pretty cool. But I'm a nerd who likes that sorta stuff. Plus unlike the Tesla, the i8 doesn't need to be fully charged to be able to drive. It also as an ICE that I believe acts as a generator, similar to a Chevy Volt (I think anyway). I will say that I absolutely love the styling of the i8. I think it looks fantastic. It looks totally different than absolutely anything on the road yet is unmistakably a BMW. BMW did a knock out job with the styling there. The i3 however can rot in hell. I'm sure there's some people out there who drive a Prius who think they're saving the world, these people are idiots who likely have shit jobs such as a barista at Starbucks somewhere and simply are too dumb to know any better. These people are in the minority I'd imagine. Everyone I know personally who drives these dull cars only do so because they need a new car and would like one that's good on gas because they don't mind driving an appliance. Anyway, my primary background is in finance/economics so while I know the research shows that global warming is, in fact, real the debate is how much (if any) humans contribute and how much is natural. That's the beautiful thing about empirical data though, you can't really deny it no matter what your baseless biases tell you. And no there is no massive push to get everyone to drive boring hybrids or anything. If so, companies like BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Ford, GM, and Dodge must've missed that memo. Sure the government tried to provide incentive to purchase a hybrid, but an incentive isn't some magic conspiracy to rid the world of fun, high powered ICE cars. Don't get me wrong though, I get your frustration, just think it's a bit misguided. If you'd like, move to Arlington, VA...or even worse anywhere in the state of Maryland. The things the super left leaning local political leaders around here want to push is mindbogglingly stupid. Arlington, where we refuse to widen I-66 which is one of the most congested interstates in the country because the county has "ample public transportation options, bike lanes, and trails" just makes me want to punch a wall almost every single day.
