I think if the EGR cooler becomes cracked, it will leak coolant. Depending on where the crack is, coolant leak can be internal or external.

Download BimmerLink app and get a compatible adapter. The car will show you EGR status if properly tuned to be closed via software. If the tuner did a mumbo-jumbo on that tuning and basically force closed it and turned off MIL reporting, the car will continue to request EGR to open and throw MIL signal *which will be blocked* to state something unexpected. In that case, the other way to check if EGR is closed is to simply touch the intake manifold as soon as you stop. Keep the engine on and touch the plastic manifold. If it is ambient temperature, then the air coming is ambient. If it is hot to touch, then you have hot exhaust gases mixing with ambient air. Do that after a drive WHILE CAR IS RUNNING. As soon as you shut the car off, cool air will stop flowing and plastic will warm up to engine heat simply due to conduction at that point.

Just had my car remapped and egr coded out. Problem is once I got home scanned it with bimmerlink it was still showing egr values. EGR Set point, EGR cooler bypass, EGR massflow, EGR Rate actual value, EGR output etc. Do all of those values have to be 0 if egr was coded out correctly? |

To answer original question, if your tuner deleted EGR by simply blocking its error code transmission, you can test it by unplugging it. If no CEL or drivetrain Malfunction warning appears, that is how it was coded. In that case, you may need to invest in a blocking plate where you install a block before EGR. That will block exhaust flow into intake no matter valve position. And would also provide safety vs. just unplugging. See, if you just unplug, how do you know the valve is not open or slightly open, that could cause intake to melt. Bad news. But once again, check temp of your intake or use Bimmerlink to read the boost air temp. It should only be a few degrees above ambient. If your boost temp is pretty hot, you know your EGR is pumping gases into intake. |

my egr cooler leaking like hell so im getting a delete kit with blanking plates and screw in plugs for block as the cooler is a very pricey part and not worth replacing. Does anyone know if ista p or bimmer code etc can delete egr from ecu?

To adjust the EGR valve duty cycle you'll need to utilise a specialist tuner who can reprogram the ECU.

Aye heard you need tuning software to generate egr off file then flash ECU to update it. Aye think I'll go to a tuner then have the guarantee if shit hits fan and brick it

From what i can deduce ( please correct me if i'm wrong ) there are 3 types of EGR delete:
- the physical one with a metal plate ( this can also could need an additional SW flash ) - the DDE ECU reflash - a simple coding file that can be altered with BimmerCode or extraTool |

Updating an egr map to keep it closed seems straightforward. The main problem is that we need a software only OBD2 flashing tool that connects to the ECU and downloads the maps and then allows modified maps to be uploaded. These tools cost $2k, which is actually fairly reasonable https://femtool.com/femto/ . I'm surprised car forums haven't got together and group purchased these tools. The master version allows remote mapping.

Correct. BimmerCode doesn’t have functionality for coding things such as EGR, performance brakes, etc.
Coding the EGR valve requires modification of the ECU and therefore specialist software.

I've found a guy in the UK in the East Midlands called SP Tuning that will do a software egr delete for £120 https://www.sptuning.co.uk/m.index.html

The only issues I have had since running an SCR/EGR delete is running into particulate sensor and DPF warnings. If you have ISTA, run backpressure tests and possibly manual regenerations. At some point, you will get a drivetrain warning that won't go away saying your DPF has reached its lifespan, to which you then run a "replacement" in ISTA. My 328d hit around 180k before seeing this; delete/coding was done around 90k.
These are all band-aids until you get the actual DPF deleted. |

Manual regenerations will not help anything. The ecu control of the DPF is quite good on these F chassis diesels. If the tuning messes with it and screws that up, then yes it'll be damaged. There's good tuning and less than good.

I've got bimmerlink and since the egr software delete, the back pressure has not been affected, regens happen as normal and I get more mpg. I'm tempted to physically delete it now as it frees up space in the engine bay.
