Revving the flat six in this puppy to 7500 rpm was pretty sweet indeed

So not a car.....but definitely a driver.
My 1970 Donzi Ski-sporter, now called a Sweet 16'
The pics are when it had a complete retro-fit. She has a Ford 351 Holman Moody race prepped, About 400 HP, with open wet exhaust. Still not broken in, but revs out to over 6000 RPM, a "D" coupon ride. |

That's some down-home goodness, right there. I'm a Ford guy from way back. Still have a bunch of Holman-Moody big-block Ford parts. Had a wonderful conversation once with Kenny Thomson, one of the original H-M crew when Ford was pumping big bucks into their shop.

Ferrari 458 for me.
570 hp at 9000 rpm. Surprisingly good torque with 400 ft-lbs at 6000rpm, and 80% of that available below 3200 rpm. By comparison the E92 S65 is about a 12% smaller engine (4.0 vs 4.5)... but makes 160 less hp and 100 ft-lbs less torque (25% down). The new GT3 is also a 4.0, but down 2 cylinders. surprisingly it puts down similar power curves to the 458 numbers. probably more to do with Porsche under rating and Ferrari over inflating their crank numbers.

Just remembered one from waaaaaay back. In the mid-1980s a friend of mine had a Fiat Dino. It was from when Fiat owned Ferrari. Bertone coachwork, and a Ferrari 2-liter DOHC 24-valve V6. Gorgeous motor; we had it apart when he restored the car, and the machining was spectacular. That thing made a heavenly racket at high revs, bombing down narrow 2-lane roads lined with pine trees in northern Minnesota.

The S2000 was a brilliant car, it's a shame that Honda hasn't done another rwd car since. Also a shame that Mazda has never really given an Nx car a motor with similar power. |

My 2002 S2000 with Comptech exhaust....shifted at 9,000 RPM just before the 9,250 RPM rev limiter....such a wicked sound from a 2 litre 240 HP engine,

I miss the V8 in my '14 Mustang. I had it tuned and redline was 7200. With a GT500 exhaust it sounded sooooo good. Owning a Turbo 6 makes me realize I NEED a V8 in my life.

I've yet to sample an ICE car under $100k that is as smooth at high revs (>8000rpm) than from a 13b Rotary. Compared to pistons, this thing feels like... "double cream".
Warm up lights like the M3. It has the characteristic of the sporty handling between S2000 with BMW 3-series comfort. In a word - sublime. I replaced my S54 M Roadie years ago with RX8 due to starting a family and not wanting to compromise on driving thrill and keep doing Solo IIs. Thought that I will replace it one day. 13 years and many BMWs and WRXs later... the RX8 still remains. |

Miata doesn't become the best selling sports car of all time without good reasons. While they are no revvers (actually they felt uncouth at high rpms), they are so fun even tooling along Main St. Yet they are more Miatas at the track than all the cars posted here on any given weekend. Now that says something about this diminutive Mazda. As the world marches towards soulless digital vehicular appliances, I wish I have the money to buy all these great analog vehicles that ooze character. |
