I think they mean that that will get accentuated. As with previous PPK's the AT will get a greater torque boost over the MT. Nice increase, but nothing dramatic really, +26h. The torque gain for the AT sounds promising, +36lb ft. It'll likely cost too much for the given gain though, especially with a new engine cover, silence piece, additional control module, whatever that is. When they released the PPK for the 135i there was a discounted introductory price that was actually pretty good, $599 plus install. Many were getting it installed with tax around $730, of course tax varies. But that was a stage 1 PPK, which was just software, unless you had an older '08 N54 that required an additional control module. There is also a stage 2 PPK2 that includes additional cooling and some other items, higher cost. Not too bad at $730 installed out the door and retaining the warranty for the software only 135i. The JB N55 is $380 and you install it yourself. The gains are a good bit higher, claimed crank increase +50hp and +60lb ft. At the wheels, the dyno shows a substantial curve increase in both HP and torque. 135i PPK were showing a good +20hp and +20lb ft at the wheels. Not bad for full warranty and $730. But I'll bet the PPK for the 335i N55 will be more a good bit more than $1000 installed. If it's over $1000 installed, I'll have to pass. If they offer a software only upgrade at a lower cost, then maybe, if it's under $800 installed. Last edited by RPM90; 09-30-2012 at 06:27 PM.. |

All the new standard ISTA firmware updates removes most, if not all, exhaust burbles in all N55's as to give more exclusivity to those willing to shell out the extra coin for the PPK update. My 135i was a throaty muscle car gurgler for most of it's life until the PPK STG1 was released and they subsequently re-fashed my car...burbles gone and throttle response softened. This is all part of the master plan. My new 335i F30 currently has the burbles as well, although not as raw and raspy due to all the exhaust plumbing vs. my 135i but I am sure once the PPK is released they will zap it. How shiity is that?

If they remove the burble through firmware. Do you think there's anyway to flash it back in there?

So does this mean early production cars like mine ( 11/2011 ) won't work with the power kit? If so that's my friggin luck. Goddamnit. I'll keep my BMS tune. Probably faster anyway.

It says available for cars from January 2012. It also says the same for the exhaust too. Maybe they are just saying for f30 models only. Hope so.

Oh good. I've had one of those "worst case scenario" days today so I'm a little on edge.

Interested in just the software alone unless I get to hear the M-performance exhaust in person lol.

Yeah lets screw the people that went out and were among the 1st to purchase an f30 and make them shell out another $1,000 plus to retain what their cars already had.

Aha I see. So it only affected the 135i?

It might have affected other cars too, but that update was a while ago...F30 335 owners are fine.

Hi,
I just order the 335xi M sport with ZWR, 2PF, 2VF, 2VL...........etc I'm planning to get the PPK and M performance exhaust system installed before delivery. How much performance gain am I looking at? Does it worth it? I will not track my car but just need some more excitement. Thanks, |

N55 135is went through a roller coaster of good and bad software versions. When I first bought mine (as far as I know I was one of the very first to have an N55 in the US), the throttle response was awful there was literally a delay between flooring the pedal and the wastegate even beginning to close and build boost. They fixed that fairly soon, but eventually there was another update that made the throttle response a little worse and seemed to make the engine significantly quieter, too. I doubt BMW was intentionally screwing us over and I seriously doubt we'll see anything like that with the F30 since the N55 is a carryover engine and has been in production for several years now.

My point is it WILL happen on the current cars, as well, once the tune is officially released. They will slowly re-flash cars coming in for service to lose those features. The laymen will most likely not be able to tell the difference but enthusiasts like us will recognize the changes immediately. BMW has been doing this since the 70s..it's normal behavior.

BMW always develop newer and better maps for the car. They improve drivability, consumption and gas response etc. If something is "lost" between updates I would rather call it evolution than that they are pushing out "downgrades" to force people to buy a product.

That whole, "let's reflash cars that come in for service so the PPK seems worth it" seems a bit shady. ALthough, it does go along with my questioning, the exact gains that would be realized by the PPK. Since BMW has never released a dyno graph of a non PPK 335, and we know it's underrated at 300/300, and now we have a graph of the 'after PPK' saying it's xxx hp and xxxtq, what really are the gains? Is the PPK graph underrated also? If not, it's not much of an increase at all and probably not worth it (unless they start reflashing our cars to detune them).
Unless of course, the gains are truly gains above the underrated engine already... Ahh my head hurts. Can I have 350hp/350tq for $1k and keep my warranty? |
