I would like to vote in your poll but I can't anymore than I can tell you whether I'd buy an apple or bunch of grapes. There's just not enough similarity between the two cars to just say I prefer this one over that one.
I can say that if the one I choose were to be my sole car, I'd choose the BMW. That really goes for any car Porsche makes that costs less than $80K before Porsche nickels and dimes me for options. If I have something else that can carry up to four people, I'd probably get the Boxter. Both cars can transport me around, carry groceries and my dry cleaning and neither is so special that I wouldn't use it that way. I don't know if one is better than the other on snow, but in truth, if it snows, I'm more likely to just work from home anyway, so that probably doesn't matter to me enough that it'd be a determining factor. So, having covered the primary reasons for which I'd have a car in the first place, if the two cars' merits were all equal based on my lifestyle, I would have to just drive both and made a decision based on that. (That is if there's no financial reason to choose one over the other.)

Boxster hands down, wouldn't even hesitate. Now if you have kids and need back seats then definitly no to the boxster. I just picked up a 2013 M3 and I am seriously considering getting rid of it for a 981 boxster. If it was between a 335 it wouldn't even be a thought.

I went the opposite way, sold my beautiful Cayman S and bought an F30 320 with AT trans.
When you need space for 4 adults and can only afford 1 car, it´s the way to go |

One's a sedan, the other is a convertible. One's loaded for 55k, the other 85k+. Other than both being German cars renown for driving pleasure, I don't see much of a similarity.
Perhaps other options would be 435i vs Cayman, M4 vs Cayman S, 435i Convertible vs. Boxster, or M4 Convertible vs. Boxter S. Those will be much more comparable choices in a year or two when available. Of course, the Z4is could be the best option for you. It is much more similar than the 335i is to the Boxster and it's as sporty as the 335i is to drive I would imagine (I have not driven one personally). It is also more in the same price league as well. But, you asked the question Boxster S vs 335i sedan so those must be the two cars you are considering. Drive them both, decide which you prefer for your intended use and do the deal. Both are great cars, just for different uses. Personally, the 981 Boxster S is the only Boxster I've ever been interested in (except the outgoing Spyder). I think they have made so many improvements to the car and I like the styling now. My only problem is with the pricing. For that kind of money I want a few creature comforts, like power seats, Nav and a good stereo, and of course all the performance goodies like Sport Chrono, Sport Exhaust, PASM, etc. I prefer manual, but PDK is certainly well received by many. Add all of it up and you are very close to 90k, which will depreciate like a rock immediately. In the end, I'd rather have a well appointed 335i than a are bones Boxster S, but that's just me.

Yeah, that is another difference between the two. The 3 series has always been considered and respected as the "drivers" BMW, albeit less now that in the early years. The Boxster, on the other hand, as great of a car as it may be, has always been seen as the red headed step child in the loooooong shadow of the 911. Remember the pink Boxster in Legally Blonde? That's part of Porsche's philosophy and likely will always be. It did, however, save Porsche from the throngs of financial ruin, so they at least keep it nipping at the heels of the King. I can't help but think that Porsche is pricing the 911 out of reach for so many buyers now, especially with the cabriolet. Appointed equally, there is a 50k price difference between the S Cabriolet and the Boxster S. That is a big pill to swallow when most of us mere driving mortals cannot capitalize on that last percentile of performance. My head and wallet would say Boxster S all the way, but the heart would always say S Cab. Majority would likely prevail and the Boxster S would be the route I'd go as the heart tends to wander.

I owned a first-gen Boxster (1997) for 4 years; after I got that out of my system and got tired of never being comfortable (I'm 6'4" and all legs), I also realized how completely impractical it was as a daily driver. Everyone either wants to race you or key your car. I'll take an F30 335i every time.

I'd by the Cayman if I didn't need the back seat or storage space. These were the two cars I last looked at before bying the MSport. I avoided the Cayman track event in May because I knew I would be sold.
