I have read a lot of books about investing most you gain some useful info about what not to do.. If I only had to read one book I would read the one David Swensen wrote if you have a lot of money and are interested in long term success you will live by what he says..
http://www.amazon.com/Unconventional...dp/0743228383\ He runs the yale endowment fund which for the past 10 years or so hes been able to return 18% a year. ( which is very very very dam good) I currently follow his methods and make use of ETF's but again you need a good $10k or more and be very disciplined in investing. Sure you can make a lot of money in the short run trying to beat the market by picking stocks at the end of the year 80% of people who do this lose (80% number refers to mutual funds who are actively managed) and then the chance of having an actively managed fund beat the market for 5 years drops to basically nothing but pure statistical luck. Also keep in mind the amount of money that is taken out as a brokerage fee or a management fee which can range from a fraction of a percent up to 10% or more. |

Really depends what you want to accomplish. If you want to build your own portfolio for the long term there's some classic value investing books, but they will require you to read annual reports and crunch numbers and take a fair amount of time to choose what you want to invest in. If that interests you I can give you a list of books.
The other option is to set up a recurring monthly investment into a low cost S&P 500 tracking fund, some sort of international equity fund and a bond fund. That would give you a low cost diversified portfolio that benefits from dollar cost averaging. |

I have read all of those books and I think they are all great. Good way to start. A couple of those are classics in the investment world. I agree about the options but I would caution people that are just starting out in the investment world. Options are something I personally wouldn't try and tackle until you have a decent understanding of the market. This is coming from someone who trades options and sells covered calls. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth!!

Predators Ball. Dunno if it's a book (there are probably many) but read up on it.
