To me, I think...
A4 S-line = 3 Series M Sport S4 = 335is or upcoming rumored M340i RS4 = M3 This logic should be similar to other models like A3 vs 1 Series, A5 vs 4 Series, A6 vs 5... and so forth. |

I didn't realise you guys only got RS models that recently. S and RS have been around as long as I've been buying cars, as far as I can remember anyway S was always the poor-man's RS and up there with the top end V8, non-AMG Mercs but BMW never seemed to bother pitching at that level.
Back in the days of the E46 M3, we always had the RS4 with a 380bhp blown V6 and Quattro as the direct comparison and, being German, I'm sure that was truly the case from the manufacturer. When the E90 M3 came out, it was bang on for the 420bhp RS4 of the same generation and the S4 had 340bhp. I'd say it was roughly around this time that BMW first started trying to bridge the gap by turbocharging their top end 6 pots with the 335i but even that wasn't really a competitor to the higher specced and more expensive S4.

I personally am not an audi fan ( purely due to taste and not any performance reasons ) but find everyone obsessed with comparing with audi's.

Respectfully I disagree. I'm to lazy to spout facts, but see the other posts.

Well it's not exactly surprising that anyone would make general comparisons between BMW, Audi and Mercedes since they're all premium German brands with excellent reputations who make many similar cars in many similar segments And to each their own. Personally, I can't stand Audis because I think they're chintzy, bling and a bit ugly. I find Merc has an image that's older than I like to think I am and right now, the 3 series is the right car for me. In a couple of years when I get my next car, that might not be the case so I'll be doing another earnest comparison between brands to find out what suits me best

Anyway I personally think that Mercedes Benzes are the chintzy and bling cars (geez have you seen how much chrome there is on the interior and exterior????) Audi on the other hand are quite dull with their styling. BMW is just perfect! |

i always kinda figgured that the RS line is a direct competitor to the M brand, whilst the S line is sort of what bmw is coming out with their M135i whatever the hell or the M550d it's not an m-sport per say, but the S4 is like a 335i while the RS5 is the competition to the M3 coupé... $0.02

The first Audi RS car was the RS2 Avant launched back in 1994. That car was really special & it ranks right up there with the Ur-Quattro 20V. Due to this car BMW was forced to react by upgrading the E36 M3 significantly in 1996, for Europe at least. It's understandable that our friends in USA are not familiar with the history of these Audi's cos they were either not available (RS2) or not publicised over there (S2), as their brand image were in tatters during 80's & early 90's. |

To answer the question, nope, I don't think it's funny. What so funny about it?
S line is just a name. They could have named it Fred, for all I care. Then the Fred would be competing against the 335i. What should they call it? |

The US then received their first real RS car ever (im discounting the earlier released C5 RS6 because it really didn't compete with the M5) in the form of the B7 RS4 using a V8 producing 420hp while BMW was still issuing the E46 M3 and figuring out what the next bar would be for them. Make no mistake, the B7 RS4 was it and was highly acclaimed and was a bright light for the brand. But when the E92 M3 broke through the gates, also using a V8 and 420hp in a lighter and, I would say, much better looking package we had a pretty good duel on our hands. The fight got really hot and heavy and here we are today. Audi subsequently released their R8 supercar to new bestowed eyes that were otherwise saved for ferrari glances. It gave them new cultural status in the top tier marketplace. It is what it is...these cars are awesome. And ultimately "haters gon hate" and we can all live with that.

definitely not.
i am not some brand loyal person (actually every car i've had is a different brand) but i've got to say BMW has made some ugly cars. i mean every time i see an X6, 550GT , etc. when the E60 5 series came out, and well still today i think its ugly. even the F30 isn't the best looking car in class especially the non m-sports and very especially the no line ones that are very common . for really base car i'd have to say for the stripper models the C250s probably look best since mercedes doesnt really make them look much different externally... i mean walk around a no line F30 and you just notice the cheapness, the cheap trim inside. its pretty much the same with a front track A4 with no premium plus. anyway, i guess my point is every car manufacturer has its merits. i do have to say that BMW probably gets the actual driving part down most consistantly. i mean the 1 series looks kind of like a slightly sad goldfish (and the f20 one looks totally bug eyed like the current 7 series) but they drive great. i'd never give bmw a "best looking all the time" generalization though. it isnt even the best looking most of the time. |

I wouldn't call the S2 being a successor of the Ur-Quattro cos it's nowhere near it, & Audi didn't intend to replace it with the S2. |

Better motor with more power and better bigger brakes I think the 335 is well worth the extra $4000 over the 328 with a motor that pings at idle.

i don't really see your point. for $2500 for sport line, essentially you get a sport suspension, 18" rims, summer rated tires and most importantly the sports seats. you also get trim that doesnt look like plastic that was spray painted with silver paint. i would imagine buying after market parts to replace all that will cost more than $2500, especially the seats. i mean theres other cosmetic things , like having black headliner etc, that well if you want it you get. even the b pillar trim outside is glossy instead of flat black. i mean for $2500 it doesnt seem like a terrible deal unless you hate the rims that come with some of the lines. |
