Update? Can you list the tools needed for the install of springs? I want to make sure I have all of the proper size sockets/wrenches on hand so I don't have to run to the hardware store mid-install.

Hey man, hopefully you can help me out. I just took my wheels off to look at everything. Mainly to make sure I have all the tools I need and there aren't any surprises.
The front looks straight forward - which is strange b/c that's normally the harder axle. The rear had a bunch of stuff going on that I haven't seen but I'm pretty sure I know what to do. Please see the attached picture. This is the bottom of the shock on the driver's side and the pic is taken from the rear of the car. My question is, did you undo the bolt on the right? The other side has an etorx bolt and its kind of blocked by a plastic shield. I just want to make sure that this is the proper bolt to take out before I go and buy an etorx kit. What did you do about that plastic shield? IMG_9864 - With Notes by mikew2069, on Flickr Cheers!

Ya my bad!! The cursing was not needed! But good grief! Why in the world would you start a threat and not even have the springs installed when it was started??!!

Yeah man thats exactly how you do it! you gotta pull like a straight screw driver in by the plastic so u have enough clearance. It's easy if you got power tools.

Cool, thanks. Do you have to take the 21mm bolt on the left out also so you can push the control arm down or will it push down with just the bolt on the right removed?

One more question before I get started this weekend. On the front, did you take the entire front strut assembly out? I read a DIY on the e90 board and the guy did NOT take the entire strut out. He just kind of pulled the top out of the fender which I thought was very strange.

Oh yea, obviously you'd have to take it all out since you were doing coilovers and not just springs. Forgot about that

If you are doing coilovers, the front should be the 3 bolts on top, bolt behind the brake caliper, knock the lower arm holding the shock, remove shock that is connected to springs, put in coilovers with springs, loosely tighten top 3 bolts, lower arm up onto shock (use hydraulic jack to help push the rotor up) and tighten all bolts.
back pretty much same process just that the spring is separate. i just pushed down on the arm and yanked it out. the lowered springs went in easily |
