Powder coat is probably the best way to go.

Make sure to use something with a very high heat resistance, since our exhaust is extremely hot. Powder coat is a good call. I had a buddy that had painted tips and he melted them and had to get them redone.

someone on e90 post used high heat spray paint. Not the most elegant solution but it got the job done.

I used high temp spray paint with ceramic coating on mine after sandblasted them. You can easily take tips out with rubber mallet and then sand or sandblast before the paint. Cost me 12 dollars!

That looks awesome! Did you happen to use the high temp engine paint from Advance Auto or something like that? I want to do it as well, and considered drilling a small hole in them as well to let the water drain out as opposed to leaking out and fucking them up as bad. Are they a pain in the ass to remove?

I had my tips ceramic coated matte black and I thought they turned out great. You will never have to worry about melting with ceramic coating as it has a higher temperature tolerance than even powdercoating.
