GAP insurance

Has anyone else bothered?

I have just bought a policy today. £84 for two years to cover a £7,500 short fall.

Garage List
Got it on my current car and will be getting it on my 335d.

Return to invoice. A wise choice.

Yes, I do, especially as some insurers will not value back to invoice even if you totalled it (heavens forgot) on the drive home from the dealer… It's an extra slice of peace of mind.. (for me, anyway)

Surely return to invoice isn't good if you were able to get a discount on the list price - return to list is better?

Yep - looking at car2cover and speaking to friends who have bought from them, Vehicle Replacement is the best one.

Replacement means you get another BMW though, you might fancy a change?

Not on car2cover. You get a cheque for the difference between what your insurance pay and the value to buy the exact same car again.

Means you should be able to go elsewhere if you wish.

How does Vehicle Replacement Gap Insurance work?
“ In the event of an insurance write off as a result of an accident, fire or most commonly theft, our Vehicle Replacement Gap Insurance will pay the difference between your motor insurers settlement – and the cost of a replacement vehicle matching the original vehicle specification, age and mileage – even if the cost is more than you originally paid. This cover is suitable for cash and finance customers.“

Agreed. You need replacement and not return to invoice.

Anyway, this topic was covered (again!) last week!!

My dealer tried to sell me BMW "Return To Invoice".

He was convinced that was what I needed.... Until I pointed out the large discounts.

I still bought mine from ALA as I always have done. One thing they do which is great is let you pro rata any remaining cover over from the car you trade in, so in the end I only paid something like £70 for "Vehicle Replacement +"

Yes, car2cover will transfer GAP to another car if you trade in. But they wont do this with their scratch/dent repair or tyre cover though.

BMW's GAP will NOT transfer the cover and it ends the minute you sell/trade in your car. I took out 3 year GAP with BMW on my old E90 (and got shafted on the price). I only kept the car just over 2 years so lost nearly a year of GAP cover. Wont be doing that again.
