Next car

Nearly 9k miles in and just over 6 months with my new car, and overall I am really pleased with it. had a few minor things here and there but I've never second guessed my decision to order the 3 series. I have been thinking a lot lately, had I not been in such a rush at the time of ordering I should have considered a bigger engine.

I will most likely be looking to order a new car in the next 2 and a half years or so depending on circumstances at the time and when the dealer starts calling . My thinking now is that I will look at a 335D or perhaps a 430D depending on what discounts can be achieved when the time comes.

So you're not really pleased with it. What engine have you got?

I'm thinking he has a 2.0d

Isn't it a bit early for this thread given how long you still have to go?

I love our 330dx. Going to be buying another car soon (for me, 330 is my wife's), and no clue what to get. The 330 covers all bases so well, and I love the enormous sunroof on ours.

Toying with the idea of getting a 125d as a c/car, or buying a late 996/early 997.

I'll be interested to know when and what the LCI brings and might change then if good discounts appear. Or wait for the next gen 3 series but guess that might not be till mid 2018 at the earliest?

You're being brain washed by the thimble dicks on here, 2.0D has plenty of power for virtually all occasions, only problem is the racket they make.

A 6 cylinder is not all about testosterone fueled power. It's quiet, silky smooth and the torque combined with the 8 speed sport auto is an amazing package. It's so many cars rolled into one.

The way a lot of posts on this forum read is that having a bigger (or more powerful engine) is about upmanship and looking down on others, see the post from Nick the Greek about having a diesel as a courtesy car as an example.

On the move is a 6 cyl car quieter and more refined than a 4 cyl car when you take the horrendous wind and tyre noise into account?

Yes by miles.

It is that good, you can actually forget to turn the engine off!

The 3.0 6cyl is a magnitude better than the 2.0

As mentioned I went from 2.0 to 3.0

Ignore the oneupmanship etc.

Simply miles better.

They shouldn't be read like that.
They should be read that a true BMW has a straight 6 cylinder engine at the front and the power going to rear wheels. Simples

And for many of us, even better if that 6-cylinder engine is fuelled by petrol.

Being serious, I see the comments as banter, rather than one upmanship. There is certainly a place for 4-pot diesels, I've had them, was is one yesterday and again today. But it isn't my engine of choice. As I have a choice for my personal car, I choose to run a 3.0 petrol.

I started out driving 6-cylinder cars many moons ago, in Triumph 2000, 2500 and PI models. I was hooked, naturally took me into a BMW 528, as the BMW in-line six was the benchmark engine of the time.

The current N55 3.0-litre is again a benchmark engine, how can a 4-pot diesel really compete in engine terms. But that doesn't belittle the 4-pot diesel by any means.

Yes, the N47 is a rattly engine in some of the installations, including the F30, we can't deny that. But 70 mpg potential isn't to be sneezed at.

I wonder what we'll all be aspiring to in 10 years? Think it will be a tiny 6cyl petrol with hybrid battery pack...

Travelling at say 60MPH the refinement provided by the extra cylinders must be lost by the unrefined nature of other aspects of the car. After half an hour travelling at above a snails pace I bet a lot of people could forget to switch the engine off, maybe BMW should think about offering ear defenders as an option.

Point is that after the first couple of weeks I was like Jay, in that after reading posts within the forum I was lured into thinking that next time I'll go with a bigger engine, but after getting used to the car I now think why bother, the car's really not that good and the 2.0D is quick enough for 99% of occasions.

Trouble now is finding an alternative.

Dag, if you're easily offended you would be best not going on car forums but as has already been said, it's not one upmanship but rather a bit of banter. Of course on any enthusiasts site you will find a preference for big, powerful, petrol engines. I consider myself a petrolhead and if money was no issue I would drive an M3. However, my mileage and budget put me in a diesel. If I did more miles it would probably be a more economical diesel. I'm fortunate enough to have a 6 pot but I don't consider my wife a lesser human being because she drives a 2.0d. Her choice, partly because it's a second car and partly because she's not a petrolhead.

Everyone makes decisions about their car based on needs and budget. Many who drive a 318 or 320d do so because they need a car that will return 50+mpg and because the can't afford a 6 pot. I know when I bought, the price difference was negligible.

To be honest you would get more stick if you drove an x drive or a diesel rather than the size of the engine. You drive a BMW, not an Audi so you have that going for you too.

No travelling at 60mph + in sport / sport +, it's not the smooth refinement, it's the power and mass acceleration.

I have no real complaints about the car tbh, something's I may sort such as springs.

The rest is fine, when you give someone a lift and they get out going 'excellent' (something I never really got in my 2.0d) then you know it's a great car.

If you don't like the car, write down top ten reasons why you don't like it, these are now items what new car must satisfy.

Our other car is a 2.0d, so I do drive little engines as well

I don't hear that much road noise unless on M54 but every car suffers on that road!

My next car will be petrol however and could even be a Ford or Jaguar.

Lol well it's the temptation of a Mustang with big engine.

The Jag would be an XE.

The only problem is neither are estates and not likely to get 25% of either lol.

However 5.0 V8 .......
