Let me try again... A mesh/grill is said to have 50% open area when the mesh material itself takes up half of the opening. If you look at that "intake grill" it is clear that the mesh is extremely restrictive and only allows half as much air to pass through than if there was no grill there at all. Hopefully this image will help you understand the terminology...

POA = Percentage of Open Area

I just ordered an aFe pro dry S drop-in as I too have that ridiculous OEM filter. Thanks, Mike for pointing that out. I never would have seen that.

OK - by comparison to your image, sizing of mesh on part # 15 that I removed and refitted for AFE ram air scoop was somewhere between POA of 62% and 80 %.

FWIW, I got silly (cabin fever last month) and drilled 6 x 3/4" holes in my stock airbox. There is a noticeable difference in the sound of the intake at idle.

Not sure what all that mean but it's there. The holes I made ARE being used to some extent.

I'll probably pull my bumper cover off this spring to mod that intake grill and remove the label on my ACC sensor. I'll have to revisit this when I can further demonstrate how restrictive the OE engine intake is.

I still have my OE airbox; so I could fire up my OBDLink and try and log A/B measurements between OE and MPPK airboxes. Honestly I doubt I'll be able to generate enough ambition to prove to you guys a larger than OE engine intake enables more air to enter the engine.

That seems to be the difference. M Sport cars have the dual layers, non-M Sports don't. Wonder if the carbon layer adds sound somehow?

My M Sport (2/14 production) doesn't have the dual layer.

According to the ETK 13717602643 is the number for the Hot Climate Version (S823A), 13718616909 is the number with Cold Climate Version (S842A). Not sure how that works, because I don't have S842A, I have S823A (Hot Climate Version), but do have that filter, as do all F34s.

I am selling my K&N, gently used, with <=3000 miles on it. Satisfied with the purchase for sure, but I have the Dinan intake on the way and no longer need the K&N. PM me if interested. $40 shipped OBO.

Does anyone have a side by side picture of the airboxes. Just wondering the difference between the two.

Is is the large whole at the front or more to it.

I was just looking at my filter, and I have an M-sport with the dual layer filter. Don't have MPPK installed either.
